Let’s Go to the Beach! By Interior Designer - Rock Robins
White sands. Crashing waves. Cool breeze.
Who doesn’t love the beach? Whether a short dip on the calm waters, or a long
walk along the coastline, a day at the beach is a surefire way to get some
much-needed rest and recharge. It’s amazing how spending time under the sun can
make one feel both at peace and excited to face the world and its challenges.
You can get that same beach experience in your
bedroom by giving it a nautical treatment. Decked in a perfect combination of
red, white and blue, seaside-inspired spaces are the best places to wake up to
each morning. It is always in style and is suitable for both kids and adults.
Best of all, a nautical theme can be achieved with a simple paintjob.
When you hear the words “nautical”,
“maritime” and “seaside”, colors blue and white come to mind. Ceilings decked
in navy blue or bottle green are reminiscent of the sparkling ocean. Sky blue
and white, meanwhile, reflect the clear skies and fluffy clouds. For those who
prefer neutrals, light browns and beiges that resemble sandy beaches are ideal.
If you’re feeling creative, you can also mix these tones to capture the perfect
beach setting on your walls. Don’t forget to paint your ceiling a similar
color.
A feature wall is a great way to add visual
appeal to a nautical-themed bedroom without overwhelming the entire room. For
example, you can paint one wall with blue and white horizontal stripes. You can
use this section to highlight specific elements in your room, including
pictures and art pieces. Alternatively, for a more unique look, you can paint a
freestyle wall mural consisting of maritime-inspired designs.
Similar to the ceiling, your floors need
refurnishing as well. For a seaside look, hardwood floors are best. If your
bedroom is already installed with hardwood floors, you can apply clear
polyurethane to lend to it a ship deck appeal. Something more colorful with a
distress finish also works well in creating a weathered seaside look. If you’re
perfectly happy with your floors but still want to achieve a nautical design,
consider repainting your trimmings and crown moldings in red, white or blue.
