Manila Interior Designer: 3 Tips to Organize Your Closet

Did you know that your closet is more than just a storage unit? Similar to your home and your bedroom, your closet is essentially an extension of who you are, reflecting your personality and style. Knowing this, why not dress up your dresser? You’d be surprised how decluttering and giving careful thought on organization can instantly maximize your storage space and make it look and feel uniquely you.

Want to start designing your dream closet? You never have to choose between functionality or form with these organizing tips from sought-after interior designer Rock Robins.

1. The importance of decluttering cannot be stressed enough. When you begin to decorate a room, you start with a blank slate. The same thing goes for your closet. You have to empty it out. Before rearranging your clothes and accessories, it’s essential that you first see the entire space you’ll be working on.

The next step is to sort out your wardrobe. It helps to divide your clothes into four piles: keep, fix, donate and toss. It’s also a good idea to ask yourself how frequently you use each item. Clothes you wear regularly are definitely for keeps. The ones you haven’t worn for several months, however, ought to be given or donated.

2.   Once you’ve made up your mind about the items you want to keep, the next thing you need to do is decide where you want to store them. Regardless if you have a walk-in closet or a free-standing one, if you’re not mindful of how you store your clothes and accessories, your closet will always look and feel cluttered.

The most effective way to avoid this is to consider how much space your items will take up. From there you have to decide which of these pieces you need easy access to at all times. Clothes you wear regularly should be hung, while those that are worn seasonally, such as winter jackets and beach attires, can be stored in separate boxes or plastic bins. For folded items, it’s helpful to stack them according to type.

3.     A good rule when buying new items is this: Put one in, take one out. This ensures that you will have enough space to store these bought articles. This is also a nice exercise to discipline yourself to stop hoarding clothes and maximize using the ones that you have. If you can, you may even want to take inventory of your items, so you know if there are things you need to buy or not.

Once you’ve organized your closet to your liking, it’s best to take at least 30 minutes every week to clean and reorganize your closet to ensure that what you’re storing are only those that are essential. When all else fails, you may want to get help from a professional. An interior designer will not only help you sort out your wardrobe, but can also make necessary adjustments to maximize your closet space and design it in a way that suits your taste.
